Activists in Taiwan Protest Shanghai World Expo

Speaking on Tuesday outside the Grand Formosa Regent Taipei Hotel, rights activist Shen Ting traveled from Hong Kong to Taiwan to protest the visit of Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng. Inside the hotel, Han was meeting with Taipei Mayor Hao Longbing to drum up support for the Shanghai Expo, which will begin in less than a month.
Shen Ting is the Chairwoman of Hong Kong-based rights group The League of Chinese Victims. She’s been traveling around the world to draw attention to the treatment of Shanghai residents displaced by the 2010 World Expo. She wants the public to see past the glitz and glamour of the Expo.

“They have forcibly relocated residents who lived on the site of the Expo, and the residents haven’t gotten proper compensation. House prices in Shanghai have risen to over $3 million yuan, but [the authorities] only gave them $400,000. Residents can’t find similar housing with that amount of compensation.”
The Shanghai World Expo sprawls over two square miles. According to its official website, over 18,000 families had to be relocated to make way for the construction. more …
